This is a fun pattern, which is made with decreases of 2 double crochets: crochet 2 double crochets together. It is very similar to pattern 5. In this variation we make a row of double crochets between the rows with the triangles. This gives you a nice example of how you can combine stitches.
It depends on your own preference what you want to use as the front. I think the double crochets that are crocheted together look a little nicer on the back of the work, but the difference is not that big.
How to make the foundation row, how to make single crochets and double crochets and how to make decreases can be found in the crochet course.
